NIPA Logo: National Institute of Pension Administrators

The Accredited Pension Administrator (APA) and Accredited Pension Representative (APR)

designations are offered by the National Institute of Pension Administrators (NIPA). The APA and APR designations are earned by the successful completion of a series of self‐study courses and examinations, covering all aspects of plan administration and the fundamentals of retirement plans with an emphasis on defined contribution plans and investment philosophy. The APA and APR designations are maintained annually by completing 10‐15 hours of continuing education and NIPA membership.

The Qualified Pension Administrator (QPA) and Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA)

designations are offered by the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA). The QKA and QPA designations are earned by the successful completion of a series of examinations and/or educational modules, covering retirement plan fundamentals, defined contribution administrative issues and administrative issues of defined benefit plans. The QKA and QPA designations require 40 hours of continuing education credits (two of these must be in ethics) in a two-year cycle in addition to a current ASPPA membership.

IRS

The Enrolled Retirement Plan Agent (ERPA)

designation is issued and maintained by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to applicants who successfully complete two written examinations and demonstrate competency and adhere to professional and ethical standards of conduct. Individuals obtaining an ERPA designation earn the privilege to practice before the (IRS). The scope of an ERPA to practice before the IRS is limited to certain sections of the Internal Revenue Code relating to retirement plan matters under Title 26 of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). An ERPA must complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years, with a minimum of 16 hours each year (two of which must be on ethics).

Tax-Exempt and Governmental Plan Consultant (TGPC)

designation is issued and maintained by NTSA. This designation is the only one of its kind in the retirement industry that specifically focuses on the niche but large market of 403(b) and 457(b) plans. Earning this credential will prove to your clients and colleagues that you understand the specific rules and requirements for these plans.
